A Study of the Anatomical Variations in the Position of the Greater Palatine Foramen in Adult Human Skulls and its Clinical Significance International Journal of Morphology
Dave,Mitesh R; Yagain,Vaishali Kiran; Anadkat,Samir.
Pain is a common distressing symptom in dental practice. Depending upon the cases, different techniques are used to relieve pain. One of these is peripheral trigeminal nerve block. Peripheral trigeminal nerve block anaesthesia has proved to be an effective and convenient way to anaesthetise large regions of oral and maxillofacial complex. This block can be intraoral or extra oral. The intraoral route is through the greater palatine foramen in which the dental surgeons enter into the pterygopalatine fossa, where the maxillary nerve is situated. The morphological variations in the position of greater palatine foramen may be of clinical importance in the administration of local anaesthesia and in palatal surgery. In the present study, the distance of greater...

A study of the river basins and limnology of five humic lakes on Chiloé Island RChHN
VILLALOBOS,L.; PARRA,O..
From November 1996 to October 1997, the river basins of five humic lakes on Chiloé Island were studied monthly: Lakes Natri, Tepuhueico, Tarahuín, Huillinco and Cucao. The objective of this study was to know the catchment area, river basin and the main physical, chemical and biological characteristics of these humic lakes. The trophic status, the actual loading, and the mass balances of phosphorus and nitrogen were determined in relation to anthropogenic activities. Lakes Cucao and Huillinco were characterized by a marine influence. All the lakes had brown coloured waters, caused by humic substances, which limit their transparency. Lake Natri was the deepest (58 m), whereas Lake Tepuhueico had the shallowest depth (25 m). Total phosphorus and nitrogen...

Jurczak,Anna; Kościelniak,Dorota; Papież,Monika; Vyhouskaya,Palina; Krzyściak,Wirginia.
BACKGROUND: Recently, a continuous growth of interest has been observed in antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in the light of an alarming increase in resistance of bacteria and fungi against antibiotics. AMPs are used as biomarkers in diagnosis and monitoring of oral cavity pathologies. Therefore, the determination of specific protein profiles in children diagnosed with early childhood caries (ECC) might be a basis for effective screening tests and specialized examinations which may enable progression of disease METHODS: The objective of the studies was to determine the role of histatin-5 and β-defensing-2 as a diagnostic marker of early childhood caries progression. In this work, results of concentration determination of two salivary proteins...

A STUDY ON SEDIMENTARY ENVINONMENTS BY REMOTELY SENSED DATA IN THE SOUTHERN TIDAL OF KANGHWA ISLAND, KOREA Gayana
Yoo,Hong-Rhyong; Ryu,Joo-Hyung; Bae,Il-Hwan; Ahn,Yu- Hwan.
The southern tidal flat of Kanghwa Island with an area of approximately 90 km² is one of the biggest flats on the western coast of Korea. Remote sensing has been identified as potential tool to provide synoptic information of the intertidal environments. To estimate quantitatively the morphological changes in a tidal flat, it is necessary to measure both the amount of sedimentation or erosion and the sediment facies involved. Thus, the objectives of this study are : (i) to generate an intertidal digital elevation model (DEM) using the waterline method around 1989; (ii) to quantitatively estimate the morphological changes from the generated DEM for the years 1989 and the extracted waterlines for the year 2002; (iii) to discriminate the surface sedimentary...

A Study on the Variations in the Formation of the Trunks of Brachial Plexus International Journal of Morphology
Shetty,Surekha D; Nayak B,Satheesha; Madahv,Venu; Braganza,Cilwyn Shalitha; Somayaji,S. N.
Brachial plexus shows several variations in its formation and branching pattern. Variations in the formation of the trunks are very rare. We studied 44 dissected specimens specifically for variations in the formation of the trunks of the brachial plexus. 5 cadavers (11.3%) showed variations in the formation of the trunks. All the variations were unilateral. In one cadaver (2.27%), the middle trunk was formed by union of C7 and C8 roots and lower trunk was formed by T1 root. Upper and middle trunks were fused with each other in one specimen (2.27%). In 3 specimen (6.81%), the C5 root pierced scalenus anterior before joining C6 to form the upper trunk. Knowledge of its variations is of importance to orthopedic surgeons, neurologists and anesthesiologists.

A Study on the Variations of Size, Shape and External Features of the Spleen in South Indian Population International Journal of Morphology
Nayak B,Satheesha; Somayaji,S. N; Soumya,K. V.
The spleen is the largest lymphoid organ. It is wedge shaped and measures about 1 inch thick, 3 inches broad and 5 inches long. It presents characteristic notches on its superior margin and has a hilum on the visceral surface. The aim was to study the anomalies related to size, shape and external features of the spleen and discuss their clinical importance. As there are not many reports on variations in size shape and features of spleen in the South Indian population, we decided to do this study on cadaveric specimens. We observed 50 spleens fixed with 10% formalin. Among the 50 spleens observed, 25 spleens (50%) were normal and had all the features explained in the textbooks. 25 spleens (50%) did not have any notches on the superior margin, 2 spleens (4%)...

A three-year mark-recapture study in a remnant population of Crocodylus acutus Cuvier in Portete Bay (Guajira, Colombia) Gayana
Espinosa,Mara I; Bertin,Angéline; Gómez,John; Mejía,Florencio; Guerra,Martha; Baez,Lina; Gouin,Nicolas; Patiño,Edgar.
The American crocodile, Crocodylus acutus, has experienced important population declines worldwide due to human persecution, overexploitation and habitat loss. C. acutus remains critically endangered in some countries such as Colombia where the lack of detailed surveys on its ecology and distribution constitutes a major barrier to the development of effective conservation strategies. We conducted a three-year capture-recapture study to investigate the demographic status of C. acutus and to identify environmental variables likely to in uence its distribution in Portete Bay (Colombia). We estimated the crocodile population to be relatively small (< 140 animals), to include very few adults, and to demonstrate a very strong de cit in females in the juvenile...

A time-energy analysis of daytime surface activity in degus, Octodon degus RChHN
Kenagy,G.J.; Vásquez,Rodrigo A.; Nespolo,Roberto F.; Bozinovic,Francisco.
We present an analysis of time and energy allocation in a day-active caviomorph rodent, the degu, Octodon degus, in central Chile. We quantified components of surface activity in the field on a daily basis in individual degus near the time of the summer solstice, when conditions of heat and aridity were also at a seasonal extreme, in order to answer the following questions. Does the absolute time available for surface activity limit performance? Does the allocation of time and energy for locomotion place a functionally significant limitation on overall energy balance and performance? Degus spent about 2/3 of their above-ground time foraging; they remained stationary about 88 % of the time, walked around slowly about 10 %, and were running rapidly from one...

A TROPICAL PACIFIC PREDICTION SYSTEM OF INTERMEDIATE COMPLEXITY: ROLE OF THE VERTICAL STRUCTURE VARIABILITY Gayana
Dewitte,B; Ganachaud,A; Dejoan,M.-A; Grimini,P; duPenhoat,Y.
An intermediate ocean-atmosphere coupled model of the tropical Pacific is used to investigate the sensitivity of the seasonal forecasts to the configuration of the oceanic vertical structure. The models consist in a three baroclinic mode tropical Pacific Ocean model and a Gill (1980)'s tropical atmosphere. The predictive skill of the model using a simple nudging method for the initialization is first presented from 1970 and compared to the results of other prediction system of similar complexity, which emphasizes the modulation of the skill on decadal timescales. It is then demonstrated that the skill is critically dependant on the energy distribution on the baroclinic mode, higher-order mode contributions being favored at some period and not at others....

A Variation of Phrenic Nerve: Case Report and Review International Journal of Morphology
Prakash,; Prabhu,Latha V; Kumar,Jwalaram; Madhyastha,Sampath; Singh,Gajendra.
During routine dissection in the Department of Anatomy following anatomical variations of phrenic nerve were observed on right side in the neck region of a middle aged cadaver. The phrenic nerve in its early course close to its origin was giving a communicating branch to C5 root of brachial plexus and at the level of the root of neck just before entering the thorax, the phrenic nerve was placed anterior to the subclavian vein. This unique case of phrenic nerve variation gains tremendous importance in context of subclavian vein cannulation, implanted venous access portals, and supraclavicular nerve block for regional anesthesia
